Why Battery Certifications Matter for Importers
When you import batteries across international borders, certifications are not optional — they are the legal and commercial foundation of your business. Customs authorities, retail buyers, and end consumers all rely on certifications to verify that batteries meet safety, performance, and environmental standards.
More importantly, certifications protect you. A shipment of uncertified batteries can be seized at customs, trigger product recalls, or expose your company to liability. Understanding what each certification means — and how to verify it — is essential knowledge for any battery importer.
CE Marking (European Union)
What it is: The CE mark is a mandatory conformity marking for products sold in the European Economic Area (EEA). It indicates that a product meets EU safety, health, and environmental requirements.
For batteries, CE covers:
- Low Voltage Directive (LVD) — for batteries in electrical equipment
- Battery Directive (2006/66/EC) — covering chemical content, labeling, and collection requirements
- RoHS Directive — restriction of hazardous substances
How to verify:
- Request the Declaration of Conformity (DoC) document
- Check that the DoC references the specific EU directives
- Verify the technical file is available for inspection
Common misconception: CE does not mean a product has been tested by a third party. Manufacturers can self-declare CE compliance. For high-risk applications, look for CE combined with third-party testing.
RoHS Compliance
What it is: RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances) Directive restricts the use of specific hazardous materials in electrical and electronic equipment, including batteries.
Restricted substances:
- Lead (Pb): max 0.1%
- Mercury (Hg): max 0.1%
- Cadmium (Cd): max 0.01%
- Hexavalent chromium (Cr VI): max 0.1%
- Polybrominated biphenyls (PBB): max 0.1%
- Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDE): max 0.1%
Markets requiring RoHS: European Union, UK (post-Brexit), China (similar standard), South Korea, Turkey, and increasingly global.
How to verify: Request test reports from an accredited laboratory (SGS, TÜV, Intertek, Bureau Veritas) showing RoHS compliance for each substance.
SGS Testing and Certification
What it is: SGS is the world's leading inspection, verification, testing, and certification company. SGS certification indicates that a product has been independently tested and verified by a trusted third party.
Why SGS matters:
- Independent verification (not self-declared)
- Globally recognized by importers, retailers, and customs authorities
- Covers performance testing, safety testing, and chemical analysis
For batteries, SGS typically tests:
- Capacity and discharge performance
- Leakage resistance
- Short circuit protection
- Chemical composition (RoHS compliance)
- Labeling compliance
IEC 60086 Standard
What it is: IEC 60086 is the international standard for primary batteries, published by the International Electrotechnical Commission. It defines battery dimensions, nomenclature, and performance requirements.
Key parts:
- IEC 60086-1: General requirements
- IEC 60086-2: Physical and electrical specifications
- IEC 60086-4: Safety for lithium batteries
- IEC 60086-5: Safety for portable primary lithium batteries
Why it matters for importers: IEC 60086 compliance ensures your batteries will fit standard battery compartments and meet performance expectations globally.
UN38.3 (For Lithium Batteries)
What it is: UN38.3 is the United Nations transport testing standard for lithium batteries. It is required for air transport of lithium batteries and is increasingly required by sea freight carriers.
Required tests include:
- Altitude simulation
- Thermal test
- Vibration
- Shock
- External short circuit
- Impact/crush
- Overcharge (for rechargeable)
- Forced discharge
