Understanding the OEM Battery Manufacturing Journey
For first-time battery importers, the OEM process can seem opaque. What happens between sending an inquiry and receiving your first shipment? How long does each stage take? What decisions do you need to make?
This guide walks you through the complete OEM battery process as practiced at Dukecell — from initial contact to delivery at your warehouse.
Stage 1: Initial Inquiry and Requirements Definition (Day 1–3)
What happens: Your inquiry is reviewed by our technical and sales team. We assess your requirements against our production capabilities.
Information we need from you:
- Battery type and size (e.g., LR6 alkaline AA)
- Target quantity (initial order + projected annual volume)
- Target market (determines certification requirements)
- Packaging requirements (bulk, blister, retail box, custom)
- Labeling requirements (your brand, IEC markings, languages)
- Timeline requirements
What you receive:
- Technical feasibility confirmation
- Preliminary pricing indication
- Certification documentation relevant to your market
- Sample availability timeline
Stage 2: Sample Production and Approval (Day 4–15)
What happens: We produce samples matching your specifications — including custom packaging and labeling if required.
Standard samples:
- Delivered within 3–5 business days
- Include test reports (capacity, leakage, dimensions)
- No charge for standard samples
Custom samples (with your branding/packaging):
- Delivered within 7–14 business days
- Packaging artwork must be provided by you (or we can design it)
- Small tooling fee may apply for custom packaging dies
Your role:
- Test samples in your actual application
- Verify packaging dimensions fit your retail display
- Confirm labeling meets your market's regulatory requirements
- Provide written approval or revision requests
Stage 3: Order Confirmation and Production Planning (Day 15–20)
What happens: Once samples are approved, we finalize the commercial terms and schedule production.
Documents exchanged:
- Purchase Order (from you)
- Order Confirmation / Proforma Invoice (from us)
- Packaging artwork approval (signed off by both parties)
Payment terms:
- Standard: 30% deposit, 70% before shipment
- Established customers: negotiable terms available
- Payment methods: T/T bank transfer, L/C
Stage 4: Production (Day 20–45)
What happens: Your order enters our production schedule. Lead times depend on order volume and current capacity utilization.
Typical production lead times:
| Order Volume | Lead Time |
|---|---|
| <500,000 units | 15–20 days |
| 500,000–2,000,000 units | 20–30 days |
| >2,000,000 units | 30–45 days |
Quality control during production:
- Incoming material inspection (zinc, MnO₂, electrolyte)
- In-process quality checks every 2 hours
- Finished product sampling per AQL standard
- Capacity and leakage testing on finished goods
Stage 5: Pre-Shipment Inspection (Day 45–50)
What happens: Before shipment, we conduct a comprehensive pre-shipment inspection.
Standard inspection includes:
- Visual inspection (packaging, labeling, quantity)
- Electrical testing (voltage, capacity)
- Leakage test
- Dimensional check
- Carton drop test
Third-party inspection: You may arrange an independent inspection by SGS, Bureau Veritas, or Intertek at your cost. We fully support and facilitate third-party inspections.
Stage 6: Shipping and Logistics (Day 50–75)
Shipping options:
- Sea freight (FCL or LCL): most cost-effective for large orders
- Air freight: available for urgent orders or small quantities
- Express courier: for samples and small orders
Documents provided:
- Commercial Invoice
- Packing List
- Bill of Lading / Airway Bill
- Certificate of Origin
- Test Reports / Certificates (CE, RoHS, SGS as applicable)
- MSDS (for lithium batteries)
Typical transit times:
| Destination | Sea Freight |
|---|---|
| Europe | 25–35 days |
| North America (East Coast) | 28–35 days |
| North America (West Coast) | 18–22 days |
| Southeast Asia | 7–14 days |
